Tour Route:

Mycenaean Necropolis – Saint George Castle – Skala (6 hours)

Departure from Argostoli
Argostoli has been the capital of the Kefalonia Region since 1757. It’s a modern city with a remarkable historical and cultural tradition. Amphitheatrically built around Koutavos Lagoon, Argostoli, overlooks the fir tree-covered mount Aenos.

Mycenaean Necropolis

The Mycenaean cemetery at Mazarakata, located approximately 500 metres southeast of the settlement, was unearthed in the time of De Bosset’s tenure as Resident of Kefalonia (1810-1814) during new road constructions. A total of 17 chamber tombs and a large number of Mycenaean vases and artefacts were discovered, some of which you can admire at the Argostoli Archaeological Museum and others at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. It was, and still is, the largest Mycenaean cemetery on the island and one of the most important archaeological sites in the Ionian region.

Saint George Castle
The Castle of Saint George is located 7 km southeast of Argostoli, above the village of Peratata in Kefalonia. It has a polygonal shape and covers an area of 16,000 sq. m. The Castle was originally built in the 12th century by the Byzantines but it was the Venetians who largely gave it its present form, by erecting, for example, its external walls in 1504.

Skala
The beautiful resort of Skala lies 36 km southeast of Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia and 12 km from Poros village. Skala stands out for its natural beauty, unspoiled green landscape, crystalline waters and stunning coves. Surrounded by lovely pine tree forests and rock formations, this elongated beach is well organised with tourist facilities and a water sports centre. A popular summer destination, Skala offers a wealth of modern amenities, most of which are gathered on the main street of the village. Free time.
